Leonard Bernstein at 100

14 Apr — 16 Apr 2018

We welcome Nina Bernstein Simmons for a celebration of the life and music of her father, Leonard Bernstein, in his centenary year.

On Saturday 14 April, young musicians from across Greater Manchester come together to perform The Bernstein Beat – joyous melodies and exuberant rhythms creating a unique introduction to music for all the family. We’ll be relying on the audience to help out with a few crucial moments!

Chetham’s pianists then take to the stage on Monday 16 April for A Total Embrace: The Anniversaries of Leonard Bernstein. Presented by Nina Bernstein Simmons, they perform the complete collection of miniature musical tributes to key figures in the composers’ life, before a screening of the rare and intimate documentary, A Total Embrace, after the interval.

Life without music is unthinkable. Life without music is academic. That's why my contact with music is a total embrace" - Leonard Bernstein
