Three times a year, lessons come to an end and Chetham’s devotes itself to performance. And at the end of each school year, we really pull out the stops – with two weeks of rehearsal, performance and musical discovery, which we’re delighted to share with music lovers across Manchester.
We bid farewell to our most senior students in Leavers’ Concerts for the Piano, Vocal and Flute departments, before they move on to leading conservatoires and universities across the world. Composers step up to the superb stage of The Stoller Hall with works for larger ensembles, whilst the younger Chetham’s Sinfonia continue their celebration of music written for ballet with movements from Gounod’s Faust. Our three Big Bands, meanwhile, are off to Band on the Wall accompanied by an array of smaller combos, and the Symphony Orchestra head to The Bridgewater Hall with two giants of the orchestral repertoire: Elgar’s The Music Makers and Holst’s The Planets, including Colin Matthews’ Pluto, under the baton of Jac van Steen. If you’d like to discover more about the works they’ll be playing, you’re invited Inside the Orchestra on Sunday 1 July, to explore the techniques and cultural context of their performance.
