Canon Philip Barratt

Originally working in Community Education for Manchester City Council Philip became a professional musician in the mid 1980s working mostly in theatre. At the time of Ordination training, he was Musical Director of Oldham Theatre Workshop working in a theatre school environment with young people from around Greater Manchester. Ordained in 1992, Philip has served his entire ministry within the Diocese of Manchester. He was a Hospital Chaplain before starting twenty years in parish Ministry. School experience has included being a serving Governor (Chair for twelve years), and a Foundation Trustee of a Church of England High School where he was also a School Chaplain. In wider ministry Philip has served on the General Synod of the Church of England, been a Bishops’ Advisor on Spirituality and been an Anglican representative on the National Network of Pastoral Musicians. He is still involved in Ordination selection as a Bishops’ Examining Chaplain in the Diocese. He been Canon Precentor of Manchester Cathedral with a responsibility for overseeing all aspects of Cathedral Worship since 2012 and was made Sub Dean in 2014. Philip is married to Irene who has been a junior school Headteacher for nearly 25 years and they have one daughter, Sarah, who is a Ranger on a wildlife reserve in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.
