Nørthern Lights Chamber Orchestra
- Saturday 20 October 2018 - 7.30pm
- The Stoller Hall
Chetham’s special friendship with their Norwegian counterparts at the Barratt Due Institute of Music, Oslo, is celebrated in this unique collaborative concert.
Outstanding young musicians come together to form a new chamber orchestra under the baton of Arvid Engegård – whose credits as a conductor include the BBC Concert Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic and Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg – to explore music which showcases their exceptional talents. A programme of virtuosic works and demanding solo passages is designed to showcase the extraordinary abilities of students drawn from these two renowned institutions.
There’s a particular emphasis on the comic in these works originally written for dance, drawing on the timeless characters of the commedia del’arte and on the neoclassicism prevalent in early twentieth-century dance and music. Stravinsky’s ballet suite is a classic tale of mistaken identity, whilst the still-fresh satire of Strauss’ comedy of manners pokes fun at vanity and social aspiration.
