HR Assistant

We are looking for an enthusiastic HR Assistant to join the Chetham’s team on a part-time basis.

Supporting Chetham’s in achieving its excellent outcomes are around 350 employees, with a wide variety of roles including academic staff, music tutors, support staff, concert hall staff, boarding staff with an equally wide variety of types of contract including term time, fixed term, permanent & ad hoc.  The School and Library also have a number of volunteers and others who have clearance to work on site.

Based in the heart of Manchester, Chetham’s is home to the UK’s leading music school; the oldest public library in the English-speaking world and The Stoller Hall; a world class concert venue.

The job

  • The role is a part-time, permanent position; 17.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
  • Reporting to the HR Manager, the HR Assistant will support the department in all areas of HR within a small in-house HR team to contribute to the provision of an effective and supportive HR Department for the whole Chetham’s community.
  • The role is a great opportunity for someone with a positive, pragmatic and collaborative approach with an interest in generalist HR and involvement in development & continuous improvement and is best suited to a candidate with a ‘can-do’, professional attitude.
  • The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 2 years’ experience in a HR administrative role.  Though this is not essential, experience of working in a HR environment is desirable.

 In return

  • Salary starting at £20,166 per annum (FTE).

Instrumental Tutor

Chetham’s School of Music is seeking a Harp Tutor with proven performance and pedagogical experience at the highest of standards. You will be working in the UK’s largest specialist music school and will be committed to the education and development of exceptionally talented young people.

The job 

  • Primarily focusing on 1-2-1 tuition of 1st study and subsidiary study students (aged 8-18), the ideal candidate will have a significant depth of experience in developing students’ holistic musical education throughout their student years.
  • This position will suit candidates whose strength lies within the classical repertoire, but who have considerable experience and interest in broader genres. The ability to support learning and classes in improvisation, folk, jazz or other areas would be welcomed. Chetham’s believes in creating robust, rounded and relevant musicians of the future. We value tutors who share our aim to support students in achieving musical and personal breadth in tandem with technical proficiency.
  • Initially anticipated hours: c. 5 hours per week (term time only, 28-30 weeks per annum).
  • Candidates will need to be flexible with regards to average working hours. Hours are allocated annually based upon student intake and therefore subject to annual variance.

 In return 

  • Salary – Hourly rate dependent on experience.

Deputy Head of House

We have a vacancy for a dedicated Deputy Head of House in New College House. New College House is primarily for our 14-18 year old female students. Our Deputy Head of House should be experienced at working with young people and able to work with parents and other stakeholders, providing unparalleled care.  New College House is a thriving Boarding House at the country’s largest Specialist Music School.

The job 

  • Nine shifts a week on a rota basis, including some work at weekends, term time only
  • The role is residential, and accommodation, which includes utility costs, is provided all year round

 In return 

  • You will be paid £26,699 – £28,283 per annum (Scale Point 23-25).
  • You will be entitled to the provision of all meals during term time.

Residential House Assistants

This is a fantastic position for those wishing to work with young people whilst also living in the heart of Manchester.  We are looking for new House Assistants to join the boarding/ pastoral team, assisting with the day-to-day care and boarding routines of the students. The role could involve working with either our youngest students, aged 9-13 or our senior students, aged 14-18 and there is some flexibility available.

The job 

  • The role for resident House staff is 40 hours a week and with three or four day or evening shifts during the week and one or two at the weekend. However, because of the nature of pastoral care, the role requires a flexible approach.
  • The role is residential and single person accommodation is available.

 In return 

  • You will be paid £9.50 per hour.
  • You will receive free term-time accommodation for the duration of your contract including utility bills, this may be in a shared flat.
  • You will be entitled to the provision of all meals during term time.

Development Manager

Chetham’s is seeking to appoint an experienced and motivated Development Manager to work across all fundraised income streams, particularly Trusts and Foundations, and support the development team in reaching ambitious fundraising targets.

Chetham’s is a registered charity (526702) and raises funds through a variety of different sources. The development team consists of four full time members of staff who are responsible for fundraising across all areas of the organisation.

The job 

  • The role is full time; 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday (flexible homeworking available).
  • The Development Manager will lead on all T&F activity as well as supporting the Development Director in all aspects of fundraising to include Major Donors, Patrons and Corporates. This varied role involves relationship management for a range of donors, comms, T&F strategy and applications as well as administrative support.
  • The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years’ experience in a fundraising role, excellent communication and written skills, be highly personable, confident and tenacious with a commitment to all areas of fundraising. Experience working in a similar arts organisation, a track record of securing gifts of over £5,000 and knowledge of database systems is highly desirable.

Deputy Domestic Services Manager

Chetham’s seeks a full time Deputy Domestic Services Manager to assist in leading the team to ensure the provision of an effective, high standard service to the School.

The job 

  • The role is 35 hours per week.
  • The purpose of the role will be to provide an efficient, pro-active and organised domestic and cleaning service to the School.
  • Leadership and management of the team of Domestic Supervisors, Team Leaders, Porters, Laundry staff and Domestic Assistants in the day-to-day delivery of cleanliness and hygiene across the School.
  • The team works year-round, Monday to Sunday.

This role will be responsible for ensuring vital ongoing funds for raised Chetham’s through Trusts and Foundations, Major Gifts, Patrons and Corporates.
  • Supported by and working closely with the Joint Principals, the Librarian, the General Manager of the Stoller Hall, the Bursar and the Trustees, the Director of Development will be responsible for driving forward the excellent fundraising work already established at Chetham’s and ensuring the vision and values are clearly articulated.
  • The Director of Development is currently responsible for three members of staff: the Development Manager, Fundraising and Events Officer and Alumni Relations Assistant. The team manage a variety of income streams including a successful trust and foundation portfolio, growing major donor and patron programme and corporate membership scheme. There is a well-established donor pool of 300+ individuals giving between £5 – £70k, with future growth in regular giving, and legacies.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience in a fundraising leadership role with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, energy, initiative, and confidence working with a range of different stakeholders. Experience working in a similar arts organisation with a track record of securing five-figure gifts and a knowledge of database systems is highly desirable.

 In return

We are looking for time-served, fully qualified and experienced Maintenance Mechanical Pipe Fitter/Plumbers.

Experience of ventilation systems would be desirable.

Candidates will be qualified to City and Guilds 6192-02 as a minimum, and have served a recognised trade apprenticeship in the disciplines required. Gas Safe registration would be desirable but not essential as the School can provide training.
