Capital Projects

Site Development Project

A major objective for Chetham’s Hospital Charity has been to continue to fulfil its stated aims, including progressing the Site Development Project plans.

Fundraising has never been more crucial to ensure funds are available to the Project. This Capital project has been divided into three phases, with £42.million having been raised and committed to the Project so far:

Phase 1

  • Palatine Building, demolition
  • New School Building, completed Summer 2012
  • Nicholls Building Refurbishment, dorms for the youngest students, completed Autumn 2013

Phase 2

  • The Stoller Hall, performance space, completed Autumn 2016 (You can read more about the build here)
  • Millgate Building Refurbishment, dorms for the boys, to be completed by 2023 (You can read more about the build here)

Phase 3

  • Medieval Manchester Visitor Attraction, upcoming

Medieval Manchester Visitor Attraction

The final phase of the committed project is to fulfil requirements and provide an enhanced visitor experience of the Library and medieval buildings, by creating a separate visitors entrance, improving the Library’s overall sustainability, and providing urgent restoration and conservation work on the buildings.

Requirements of this final phase will include:

  • Open up South Gate (as the main entrance for visitors from the street)
  • Refurbishment of The Waterhouse Building (to be used as the main visitor centre)
  • Increase opening hours for visitors
  • Increase activities for visitors

A significant Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) application was submitted in 2018 to fund a new visitor attraction for the Library, however we were unsuccessful in this bid therefore fundraising for the project will be revisited.
