The China Youth Percussion Group (CYPG) was formed in 2013 to discover and nurture the brightest young percussionists from across China, and to develop the profile of percussion across the musical world. The group has since performed across Japan, Europe and the USA, collaborating with leading orchestras, ensembles and conservatoires. Its work with composer in residence, Chen Chen YaZi, also provides opportunities to explore and promote contemporary Chinese music, and to share it with their counterparts worldwide.
For its debut trip to the UK, the CYPG will perform works from Elgar and Shostakovich, as well as the celebrated Overture to Li Huanzhi’s Spring Festival Suite, marking Chinese New Year on February 5. Players are joined onstage by percussionists from Chetham’s in an opportunity for these emerging artists to share music, learning and friendship across their contrasting cultures.
This event marks the continuation of Chetham’s close working relationship with its counterparts in China, which has seen the School’s students perform in Shanghai and Wuhan and many visits to Chetham’s by members of the Chinese community in Manchester.
