In 2018, the Northern Chamber Orchestra extended its long standing relationship with Chetham’s when it was named Orchestra in Association of The Stoller Hall.
The orchestra’s first visit in 2019 sees their vice-president Martin Roscoe perform Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto, a mighty work which the composer himself described as ‘a compromise between a symphony, a concerto and a huge sonata’. As part of our This Woman’s Work series, the second half opens with a work from a relatively little known Polish composer, Grazyna Bacewicz, her Concerto for Strings – a masterpiece of neo-classicism.
Closing the concert is a work which, at around 19 minutes, may be one of Mozart’s shortest symphonies, but the ‘Haffner’ is so full of tunes, wit and energy that no one could possibly feel shortchanged.
