Violetta is an ensemble formed by our younger string players, under the direction of Dr Owen Cox, Deputy Head of Strings. Violetta give regular performances in School and at Manchester Cathedral, and recently embarked upon a tour of primary schools in collaboration with the Outreach team.
Violetta visit schools across Greater Manchester to deliver presented concerts to primary school audiences – in July alone, they played to over 600 enthusiastic children. Members of the ensemble demonstrated their instruments and explained their role in the orchestra before answering some in depth questions from the audiences. Dr Cox explained more about string instruments and encouraged the children to listen and respond to the music they heard.
Violetta will be out and about again in the new school year, bringing their lively approach to string playing and introducing their instruments to young people in the region.
Serenata, our slightly older ensemble, have also been involved in outreach sessions in schools. Playing to around 200 primary schoolchildren in Stockport, the young musicians and Dr Cox fielded some great questions from their audiences – whose ages ranged from 5 to 11.
