Millgate House is the warm and welcoming home to our boarders, aged 13-18 in Years 9-13.
Recently refurbished, it is located within the upper areas of the Grade II listed Millgate Building, the historic Manchester Grammar School building.
With a dedicated team of pastoral house staff, Millgate House is a friendly, sociable and caring place. Our boarders can sample the hustle and bustle of Manchester City Centre, while enjoying clean and safe facilities where they can excel in their studies, and establish lifelong friendships along the way.
It’s location at the heart of our campus provides makes it the perfect place for Middle School and Sixth Form boarders to settle at the school and immerse themselves if all we have to offer.
The house is shared between Middle School and Sixth Form students, with Years 9 to 11 generally occupying 4-person dorms and Sixth Form students usually occupying single and double dorms. All dorms have secure storage and individual study desks.
Millgate House will feature a new and improved central common room for all years complete with a television and a small kitchenette, a reading room, and a games room.
Similar to the adjacent Victoria House, Millgate House is also in close proximity to our canteen, which is used by the wider school. Our catering staff at Chetham’s provide three meals a day along with supplies for student kitchenettes within the building.
When on duty, our house staff live within their own flats in Millgate House and are always on hand for students. Students are always made aware of who is on duty and where to go when they need a staff member. Regularly scheduled sign-ins ensure that the House team knows the whereabouts of all our boarders, whatever the day or time, which is in addition to the registrations that take place in lessons, allowing our boarders to come and go from the house to their activities safely and securely.
Although incredibly busy, the days are structured for our students to include mandatory study time and sports activities (or Fit to Perform), as well as mentoring for our Sixth Form students who are encouraged to take on further responsibility in their daily organisation. Sixth Form boarders will also usually be invested with House positions, such as a Prefect, or as a Senior, with which additional responsibility is inherent.
We also host extra-curricular activities, the content of which is student-driven on a regular basis. These include the very popular Saturday night socials organised by our Prefects, along with those which cater for particular interests or tastes, including film nights, Sci-fi Club, Comedy Club and a wide range of other exciting activities and weekend trips. Millgate House is truly a home-from-home for our boarders who live here.
