Hazel Fanning was trained as joint 1st study piano and cello at the Royal Schools of Music, studying piano with Sulamita Aronovsky, formerly of the Moscow Conservatoire, and cello with concert cellist Raphael Sommer. Her graduation recital at the Royal Northern College of Music was give on piano, having already attained a first teaching diploma at the age of 17.
Further teaching qualifications followed and in 1985 she began teaching at the University of Manchester’s department of Music on the Mus.B course, where she still teaches today.
In 1994 she was invited to take up appointments as visiting tutor at Chetham’s School of Music and at the Junior Department of the RNCM. These also remain current, together with a private practice.

Since that time she has remained involved in the teaching of all levels from Preparatory to Mus.M.
