Originally from Glasgow, Marianne Rawles studied clarinet with Alison Waller at the Junior Department of the RSAMD before moving to Manchester to study at the RNCM in 1997. At the RNCM her tutors included John Reynolds, John Bradbury, Nicholas Cox, Paul Dintinger and Chris Swann. While at the RNCM she was a recipient of the Sidney Fell Clarinet Prize, and attained the college’s highest performance award, the PPRNCM, both as a soloist and as a member of her wind quintet, the Langdale Ensemble.
She now works as a freelance clarinetist with all the main orchestras in the North of England, and further afield, including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Hallé, BBC Philharmonic, Manchester Camerata, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and BBC Symphony Orchestra.
A keen chamber musician, Marianne is a member of the Fell Clarinet Quartet, with whom she has recorded two CDs for Delphian Records and was the recipient of a Tunnell Award.
As well as her playing commitments, she enjoys teaching and education work. Since 2001 she has been involved in the Live Music Now! scheme, first as a member of both the Langdale Ensemble and Fell Clarinet Quartet, and later mentoring new musicians. Recently she has been studying Dalcroze Eurhythmics, and is working towards the Dalcroze Certificate. She started teaching at Chetham’s in 2015.
