Jazz and Improvisation Course
Led by Dominic Ingham and other guest tutors, the Jazz & Improvisation Course is now a firm feature of Chetham’s Summer School since launching in 2025. The programme focuses on small group improvisation, jam sessions and musical exploration, culminating in a final performance in the world class Carole Nash Hall.
We welcome applications from rhythm section players and front-line solo instruments who have an interest in jazz and improvisation. Although formal grades aren’t necessary, applicants should have the ability to;
Drums – play a swing beat (swing feel) and bossa nova, with experience playing in a small band or big band.
Bass (electric or double bass) – read through chord changes playing a walking bass line, with experience playing in a small band or big band.
Guitar (electric or acoustic) – read through chord changes, with experience playing in a small band or big band.
Piano – read through chord changes, with experience playing in a small band or big band.
Front line instruments e.g. saxophone, trumpet, trombone, clarinet, violin etc – experience playing solos and improvising in a jazz context.
Vocalists – experience singing jazz standards
Participants will also join in with group activities to the rest of the course, including singing and musicianship, with plenty of opportunity for mixing with the other courses.
