The Library holds a significant collection of diaries and journals dating from the seventeenth to the twenty-first century. Because they were not intended to be read by others, diaries have an intimate and candid quality that is missing from other archival sources. Join Jane, Chetham’s Archivist, to explore some of these fascinating manuscripts. Engage with history through the experiences of people who saw it first hand, from the Great Fire of London in 1666 to the grand houses of the Victorian gentry, and the aftermath of the Blitz in Manchester and Salford in 1940.
The session will last an hour and will begin with a short introduction to the Library and its history.
