The judging panel includes:
Helena Mackie, the principal oboe of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Growing up in a musical family, she became a chorister at Salisbury Cathedral aged 8 and took up the oboe during this time. As a teenager, she was principal oboe of the National Youth Orchestra, and went on to study Music at Clare College, Cambridge. After Cambridge, she took up a place at the Royal Academy of Music, studying with Chris Cowie, Ian Hardwick and Patrick Flanaghan, and was offered the position in Liverpool on her last day at the Academy.
Peter Dixon studied at the Royal Academy of music and after completing his studies joined the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO). After six years with the RPO he was appointed as principal cello of the BBC Philharmonic, a position he has enjoyed for the last 34 years. He has worked with some of the world’s greatest conductors including Claudio Abbado, Sir Georg Solti, Kiril Kondrashin, Andrė Previn, Yuri Temirkanov, Gianandrea Noseda, Sir Andrew Davis and most latterly with the BBC Philharmonic’s newly appointed Chief Conductor John Störgards with whom he has performed Messiaen’s “Quartet for the end of time” at the Bridgewater Hall. Peter has appeared many times as soloist with the orchestra both on CD recordings and in the concert hall. He also gave the world premiere of Yoshimatsu’s cello concerto in Japan (which was written for him)and subsequently recorded the piece with the BBC Philharmonic.
