Packed with historical facts and fascinating stories, tours of Chetham’s Library are led by our expert staff and volunteers. Explore the medieval building, hear about the magical Dr. Dee, admire the Hogwarts-esque gated shelves of the library and take a seat at the very desk where Marx and Engels’ research led to The Communist Manifesto!

A Royal Tudor Bed and a Northern Rogue
August 15th – September 11th

This summer, visitors attending the guided tours of Chetham’s Library, will have the rare opportunity to see the original marriage bed made for Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, as well as an infamous forgery.

The bed (1485) is a hugely important piece of history, as it marks the end of the War of the Roses and the beginnings of the Tudor dynasty. A copy of the bed made by George Shaw in the 1800s tells an equally riveting tale of forgery, as well as 19th century politics and business.

Tours last 60-75 minutes long, and will include time at the end in the Association Room, to view the Tudor bed exhibition (15/08-11/09).

We recommend all visitors read the Visiting Information before booking tickets.

Visitors will not be admitted more than 15 minutes after the tour has begun. If possible, please call the Library to inform them of your delay.

Additional dates will be added the week commencing 22nd July.
