Ever wondered what a typical day looks like for a student at Chetham’s? Follow Theo, one of our Year 8 students, as he takes us through a busy day balancing academic study, musical development and time with friends…
My day begins in Victoria House, where I chat with friends in the common room before academic lessons start.
The first music lesson of my day is violin. We work on important technical exercises that help me develop my playing and prepare for performances.

We fill up our water bottles and head to PE and play basketball. Then it’s break time which is another a chance to get outside, relax and spend time with friends.

Later in the morning, I have choir. Singing as part of an ensemble helps me develop important musicianship skills.

Before my piano lesson, I stop by my locker to collect my books and music. During the lesson we work on scales, sight-reading and pieces I’m learning. Afterwards, I spend some time practising on my own.

After a busy morning, it’s time for a nutrious lunch,
Once I’ve eaten, I often head to the Year 8 common room, where my friends and I enjoy a game of chess before afternoon lessons begin.

One of my favourite subjects is Science. I particularly enjoy practical experiments!

Later in the afternoon, I have a second violin lesson. This gives me the opportunity to work on my repertoire in more detail.
My final lesson of the day is academic music. Recently we’ve been learning about tarantellas.

By the end of the day, I’ve fitted in academic lessons, music lessons, choir, practice time, sport and time with friends. It’s busy, but that’s one of the things I love most about Chetham’s. Every day is different.
