It’s the time of year where you could be thinking about your future, how to pursue your interests, and moving to the next stage of your educational journey. We are so pleased you’re considering Chetham’s for your next chapter. We know that the idea of auditioning for a music school may feel nerve-wracking, but we’re here to break down the process and make your application as easy as possible.
Need some advice?
Do you have a passion for music but aren’t sure what it takes to get a place at Chetham’s? We get it! If you feel you would benefit from a bit of guidance before applying, we offer informal advice auditions where you can demonstrate your playing to our team and get helpful feedback. This way, you’ll get a better sense of whether Chetham’s is the right school for you and give you the confidence you need to apply.
For an advice audition, you just need to fill out a simple online form. There is a £45 fee for an advice audition, but if this cost is a barrier, please let us know.
Chetham’s alumnus Charles says: “I had an advice audition around November of 2021 then I had my real audition around March 2022. Everyone was really nice. It was like playing in front of friends.”
Ready to apply?
If you already feel ready to apply for a place at our school, that’s great! The application process is flexible – you can apply any time throughout the academic year.
There are a few things you will need to apply:
1. The completed application form signed by your current Headteacher
2. Copies of any relevant exam certificates
3. References from your instrumental tutors
4. YouTube links to video recordings of you playing at least two pieces on your main instrument and one piece on any other instruments, if you play them.
5. The £110 application fee – let us know if this cost is a barrier to you.
Email your form, certificate and links to admissions@chethams.com. Once your application is reviewed by our admissions team, we could invite you to an audition, which is great news!
You’ve been invited to audition. What happens next?
There is no need to be worried about your audition – see it as a chance to share your music with us. We’re looking for passion and potential, not perfection. We’re a welcoming community at Chetham’s and we want to support you every step of the way. You’ll meet Mrs Julie Scott when you arrive for your audition, who is here to help you get settled and put you at ease – you’re in safe hands with Mrs Scott!
Chetham’s alumna Mallory says: “The audition process was quite smooth. It was laid back. I didn’t feel any intensity or daunt in the situation.”
For your audition, you’ll likely play for the Head of Instrumental Department and our Music Director, Mr Tom Redmond.
Mr Redmond says: “It’s not a stressful, difficult thing. You’re just coming to play your instrument for a few people in a room.”
