There is a palpable energy vibrating through the our piano department this year!
Between international competition wins and masterclasses with world-class musicians, the last few months have been a testament to the dedication of our students and the vibrancy of our musical community. Here is a look at the highlights from a truly remarkable start to the year.
Global Recognition: The London International Chopin Competition for Young Pianists
The London International Chopin Competition for Young Pianists 2026 is an important date in the classical music calendar, drawing the most exceptional young talents from every corner of the globe and this year our students triumphed!
• Julian (Year 10): In a staggering display of artistry, Julian won the 16-and-under category before being crowned the ‘Grand Prix’ overall winner, surpassing competitors across all categories, including the under-19s.
• Artem (Year 9): Delivered a magnificent performance to secure joint second prize in the competitive 14-and-under class.
• Our Semi-Finalists: A huge congratulations to the other Chetham’s students who were selected for the live London rounds. Reaching this stage is a significant achievement in its own right.
The Keyboard Weekend
The success of our piano department isn’t just measured in trophies, but breakthroughs in the practice room and the courage to improvise in front of peers. Our recent Keyboard Weekend was a whirlwind of inspiration, welcoming three professional guests to work alongside our students.
Professor Dina Parakhina (Royal College of Music) worked with our sixth-form students on Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes and Fugues. This massive undertaking is currently in development and will reach its culmination during our summer course performances.
Meanwhile, alumnus Dr. Simon Callaghan returned to his roots to lead a marathon session in the Carole Nash Hall. Together with our students, he navigated over forty performances of Scarlatti sonatas in a single Saturday.
We were thrilled to welcome Dr. Robin Harrison to Chetham’s for the first time. A multi-faceted organist, pianist, and educator, Robin brought a highly energised approach to the session which students thoroughly enjoyed.
