Welcoming Central Conservatory of Music to Chetham’s
We were delighted to welcome our friends from the Central Conservatoire of Music (CCOM) in Beijing to Chetham’s on 22 and 23 May.
Functioning as a national center of music education, composition, performance, research and social promotion of music, the CCOM is a world-renowned institute of music that represents the highest caliber of music education in China, offering a comprehensive range of specialized programs. It enrolls 1,543 undergraduate students and 633 graduate students.
Students from CCOM and Chetham’s took part in an International Composition Competition and the entries were judged by the award-winning composer (and Chetham’s alumni) Gavin Higgins, who was highly impressed with the standard of all the entries and thoroughly enjoyed meeting all the composers. The winning pieces were performed together in the beautiful setting of The Stoller Hall.
This initiative is a wonderful example of how music brings people from all over the world together. The students rehearsed together, learnt from each other and formed new friendships. There was pizza after the performance and an exchange of gifts before the CCOM staff and students boarded their flight back to Beijing.
