Chetham’s welcomes Sarah Whewell as Joint Head of Woodwind, Brass and Percussion
We are delighted to announce the appointment of Sarah Whewell as our new Joint Head of Woodwind, Brass and Percussion. In this role, Sarah will co-lead the School’s Woodwind, Brass and Percussion department, supporting young musicians as they develop their technical skills and musical creativity.
Sarah brings extensive experience as both an educator and performer. A member of Manchester Camerata since 2008, she has recorded and toured widely, performing traditional orchestral repertoire as well as collaborating with contemporary artists and internationally renowned musicians. Alongside her performing career, she has been a tutor with the Lancashire Youth Orchestra and served as Musical Director of the Lancashire Schools Symphony Orchestra, demonstrating a longstanding commitment to developing young talent.
Sarah said: “As someone who grew up in Lancashire and has spent most of my professional life in the North West, joining Chetham’s School of Music feels particularly special. I have long admired the school’s unique role in nurturing exceptional young musicians and cherish the fact that this incredible level of training is accessible to all young musicians, regardless of their background or circumstances.
“As a passionate educator, I wholeheartedly share Chetham’s dedication to creating an environment in which students feel able both to fulfil their musical potential and develop curious, creative, compassionate and versatile minds. I am genuinely excited and honoured to be joining the wonderful team at Chet’s and look forward to contributing to the continued success of the Woodwind, Brass and Percussion department.”
Welcoming Sarah to the School, Tom Redmond, Joint Principal and Director of Music, said: “We are delighted to welcome Sarah to Chetham’s. Her wealth of experience, passion for music education and commitment to supporting young people make her an excellent fit for our community. We look forward to the leadership and inspiration she will bring to our woodwind students and colleagues.”
Sarah will take up the role in January 2027, working alongside Dr David Thornton.
Welcome to Chetham’s, Sarah!
