Alexandra Whittingham began her studies at Chetham’s School of Music at the age of eleven, where she now teaches. She went on to gain a scholarship to study with Michael Lewin at the Royal Academy of Music in London and graduated with both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. During her time at the Academy she was awarded the Timothy Gilson Guitar Prize, a Diploma of the Royal Academy of Music and the Regency Award.
Alexandra maintains an active performing career as both a soloist and chamber musician, and has enjoyed recent performances at the Royal Albert Hall for Classic FM Live, the Cayman Islands Arts Festival and over 45 venues throughout North America as part of the ‘International Guitar Night’ show.
Having signed exclusively to Decca Classics, recording plays a large part in Alexandra’s career; her first solo album on the label will be released later this year.
The presence of music education in schools is something that Alexandra has been passionate about since having the opportunity to take her first formal guitar lesson at the age of eight. In addition to teaching at Chetham’s and holding masterclasses internationally, she also enjoys holding regular workshops and presentations in schools with the aim of involving more young people from diverse backgrounds in classical music.
