Li Lu

Li Lu is a Cello Tutor at Chetham’s School of Music, where she is passionate about working with talented young musicians.

Her musical journey began when she was given a cello by her father on her fifth birthday. Soon after graduating from Wu Han Conservatory of Music, she became a member of the National Ballet Orchestra of China. Two years later, she won a major scholarship to continue her studies with the celebrated cellist Emma Ferrand at the Royal Northern College of Music, where she gained the PGDip in Performance with Distinction in 2008.

Li Lu was featured in the 2011 Sky Arts documentary Art of Survival, reaching a vast audience in the UK and internationally. Following this experience, she recorded one of her major solo works, In Love with Bach: The Complete Cello Suites. She has since performed across Europe and Asia.

Supported by the Concordia Foundation in London during 2010 to 2012, Li Lu was the lead cellist of the Concordia Cello Ensemble. She has played in masterclasses given by Bernard Greenhouse, Anner Bylsma, Christoph Richte and Ralph Kirshbaum. She has been a recipient of several awards from Arts Council England, BBC Performing Arts Fund and Irish Arts Council.

Li Lu enjoys working with many different musicians and artists, and has expanded her skills and experience by embarking on a number of unconventional musical collaborations in recent years. As a musician and an educator, she wants to connect to a wider audience, especially children, through her work, and believes music brings people together.
