This year’s Chetham’s Carol Competition produced a real variety of choral pieces, with thoughtful texts and imaginative musical settings.
The judge was Matthew Owens, a former Chetham’s student, published composer and current Director of Music at Wells Cathedral. Matthew enjoyed all the entries and was delighted with the overall standard of the competition.
The winners were:
Upper School
Winner: Lucy Farrimond
Commended: Ignacio Mañá Mesas and Ben Collyer
Middle School
Winner: Dominic Downs
On winning, Lucy commented “I am so thrilled to have won the Carol Competition. I think my inspiration for writing the piece has come from a childhood surrounded by music. I grew up as a member of the Salvation Army in Wigan, therefore would sing carols with them, play them on the piano and in my family’s brass band. I aimed to create a fairly simple yet effective carol, that is accessible with a memorable melody. I do hope you enjoy it.”
Lucy’s piece was recently performed by the Chetham’s Chamber Choir at the Light Up A Life Service in aid of St Ann’s Hospice at Manchester Cathedral.
